Thanks for posting that quote by David Abrams. Folklorists talk about the signifiers in tales from ancient cultures, such as the San of southern Africa. They seem obscure to the modern listeners but I've noticed that indigenous storytellers are still scrupulous about including them in their tellings. There's a good book on the subject written by Melissa Heckler and Carol Birch. "Who Says? Pivotal Issues in Contemporary Storytelling."
