September in the Rearview
Dear Friends,
I’m working on writing projects so I spent September immersed in the world I feel the most comfortable in: research. There is nothing quite like starting off with an intuition or the faint whiff of a memory, and then, armed with a few search terms diving down an internet rabbit hole, and emerging on the other side with a treasure trove of papers (some of which I actually do read), books, or even more ideas to look into.
It’s especially rewarding to do this when the subject is African folklore. There is always something new to discover: a connection I’d not made before, a new version of a story, a completely new story, or an analysis that simply blows my mind!
Here are some fun discoveries:
This book about the history of Zombies (Available with a JSTOR Membership)
This detailed treatment of the mythology associated with some Dogon (Mali) masks
This book of Moroccan Folktales by Jilali El Koudia (Available with a JSTOR Membership)
October will be much of the same for me: not much activity on the MA front except for the podcasts, but lots of research and writing.
I can’t wait to share some research findings with you all, though!
Be well,
Helen
